Habitat for Humanity
Position / Placement: Board Member
Habitat for Humanity Red Deer Region (HFHRD) currently has 3 vacancies for its Board of Directors for 3-year terms (January 2018 – January 2021).
Habitat for Humanity Red Deer, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity Canada, is a registered, charitable organization founded in 1994 dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by building homes in partnership with our communities and families in need. We provide no down-payment, interest-free mortgages to qualifying families, who would otherwise not be able to purchase their own home. Partner families must demonstrate a need for an affordable home, be able to volunteer 500 hours of sweat equity and have the income to repay their mortgage. In addition, we operate a ReStore in Red Deer – a social enterprise where profits are applied to support the operating and overhead costs of the affiliate and its programs. We are well positioned for growth and for achieving strategic objectives.
The Board’s mandate is to ensure strategies are met to serve more families and foster the longterm success of HFHRD by providing leadership in the areas of governance, stewardship, advocacy and sound fiscal management. Our overall responsibilities include: board governance, fund development, strategic planning, financial management, policy & by-law development, safety enforcement, risk management and accountability.
As an ideal prospective Board member, you have an affinity for the mission, cause and outcomes of HFHRD and the drive to ‘make things happen’. You are a person of integrity with high ethical standards aligning to Habitat’s core values; possess the knowledge and skill to analyze issues and champion solutions; work collaboratively with other Board members and willingness to accept accountability for and act on Board decisions. You have knowledge of the charitable, not-for-profit sector - prior Board experience preferable but not required; have general business experience; and possess expertise in one or more of the following areas: corporate governance, finance, fundraising, residential construction, cause-related marketing and donor relations.
We expect you to: attend 9 Board Meetings per calendar year; participate in a standing committee of the Board; become knowledgeable of the by-laws and policies regulating the organization and ensure we meet these accountabilities; participate in fund development & advocacy initiatives, and act as an ambassador in the best interests of HFHRD in the region.
