Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta

Position / Placement: Weekend Front Host

Purpose: To provide support at the front desk through greeting, checking in/out families, visitors, other volunteers and staff as well as providing general house support.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Greets families, visitors, other volunteers and staff
  • Provides friendly first point of contact for the House, while providing screening of guests to the House
  • Check families in and out using RMHC computer software
  • Answers the phone and responds to general questions and/or transfers to another extension
  • Role model for House policies and procedures  Handles occasional monetary transactions
  • Multi-tasks various other house jobs (ex. cleaning, laundry, organizing etc.)

Time Requirements: 

  • Shifts scheduled in four hour blocks running from 10am-2pm & 2pm-6pm either Saturday or Sunday
  • Volunteers will scheduled themselves in for shifts through the online Volunteer Calendar
  • 1 shift per week for a one year commitment is preferred, but we are flexible to circumstances

  • Ability to read people and respond to their needs
  • Organized, flexible, responsible
  • Ability to learn and adapt in a constantly evolving environment  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong computer and phone skills  Strong administration/reception skills, including accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Comfortable interacting with families and children who may be experiencing severe and/or life threatening illness
  • Stress management and coping skills
  • Ability to multi-task and comfortable seeking out staff support when needed
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Previous experience working with databases considered an asset
  • Previous volunteer experience considered an asset

Challenges of Position

  • Requires flexibility and adaptability depending on the needs of the House
  • Some shifts may be very quiet while others are quite busy
  • To avoid the spread of infectious diseases that could be fatal to children at the House, no one is permitted in the House while sick or have family members who have contagious illness
  • Working in an emotionally challenging environment
  • Maintaining a professional and personal balance

Success Measures

  • Inquires to the House via phone and walk in are dealt with in a friendly, compassionate, supportive manner
  • Check in/out of guests is completed accurately and competently, including monetary transactions
  • Families report that they have an overall feeling of support and compassion while staying at the House

Volunteer will work with

  • Children, families, other volunteers, staff, sponsors and the public

Orientation & Training:

 

  • Information session includes general House information, purpose and mandate of the organization and a tour
  • Training will initially take place in a group setting with at least two shadow shifts
  • Ongoing training as needed.
