Thanks to community members and the support of our ticket purchasers, throughout the past 18 years, Hospitals’ Lottery has raised over 8.7 million dollars to enhance health care excellence in Central Alberta. The Red Deer Hospital Lottery 2018 funding initiative is: Healthy Patients – Healthy Staff – raising funds for the purchase of low profile beds with a microclimate air powered surface with turn assist, one button boost, and max inflate. In the past beds were seen as just a place to rest but increasingly they are becoming a critical patient care tool, offering air surfaces with new fabrics to maintain skin integrity, providing advanced engineering and new technology to reduce patient falls, giving caregivers tools to better assist patients in turning, transferring and repositioning to reduce the risk of caregiver injury. www.reddeerhospitallottery.ca

On Saturday, August 12, 2018 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm the Red Deer Association for Bicycle Commuting will be hosting the first ever Cyclovia event in Red Deer. We are very excited to offer this new event for Red Deer. This will be an "Open Streets"activity, where selected streets in the downtown core will be temporarily closed to car traffic and open to anyone to bike, walk, or run - any non-car activity (e-bikes and scooters welcome). The event includes three (3) satellite stations (Collicutt Centre, Dawe Library, and Safety City) where participants will be provided with routes to the city core to enjoy a car free experience in downtown Red Deer. In addition to the open streets in the core, there will be a variety of activities, including, but not limited to: open restaurants and cafes, active living association booths, bicycle repair demos, bicycle shop booths, etc. We are eager to have Red Deer join the Open Streets global movement taking place in communities of all sizes, all over the world. The main goal for the event is to promote and increase awareness for cycling and walking as an acceptable and safe mode of travel for recreation and commuting on public streets.

This event is the 2018 NorAM/Calforex #5/Western Canadian Biathlon Championship and is a 2019 Canada Winter Games test event. Never been involved in biathlon before? Not to worry! Most roles do not require expertise. Despite the sometimes sophisticated sounding titles, most roles are very simple and easy to manage. Training and support is provided. It is also a great way to be in the thick of the excitement and to learn about the internal workings of this complex and thrilling sport! To get involved in this event, please sign up at https://www.volunteersignup.org/X4QXQ. If you have any questions about volunteering please email Trevor Naldrett, Biathlon Sport Lead, at biathlonsportlead(at)2019canadagames.ca.
